Rail Infrastructure

Network Rail’s Greener Railway Strategy sets out a shared vision for environmental and social sustainability within the UK railway industry, aiming to deliver better outcomes for communities, customers, and stakeholders. The strategy builds upon the Sustainable Rail Blueprint, developed by the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB).

The strategy is structured around eight key focus areas, grouped into three main themes:

  1. A Railway That Is Fit for the Future
  2. A Railway That Cares for the Environment
  3. A Railway That Helps Communities Thrive

To support the implementation of the Greener Railway Strategy, the Supply Chain Sustainability School has launched a series of Learning Pathways. These pathways are designed to engage supply chains involved in construction, operation, and maintenance, ensuring the effective delivery of the strategy.

The aim is to deepen understanding of the strategy’s objectives, offering practical resources and materials that can be shared at all levels, from senior management to site operatives. The School has worked closely with Network Rail, RSSB, major contractors, suppliers, and industry stakeholders to develop and refine this approach.

“"Working in partnership with our supply chain is key to delivering our Greener Railway Strategy. The new learning pathways are directly aligned to our priorities as an organisation and the Sustainable Rail Blueprint, our industry-wide framework. These free resources are a brilliant opportunity to improve the capability of our supply chain. It is important that we have a shared focus on what we are trying to achieve." ”
– Jo Lewington, Network Rail’s Chief Environment and Sustainability Officer

Rail Infrastructure – Industry Collaboration

There are 8 Individual Learning Pathways, each aligned to one of the eight key areas of the Greener Railway Strategy:

Rail Individual Learning Pathways:

  1. Supporting the delivery of net zero
  2. Contributing to a circular economy
  3. Adapting to a changing climate
  4. Protecting land, air, and water
  5. Supporting nature’s recovery
  6. Creating an inclusive and accessible railway
  7. Supporting local economies
  8. Improving the wellbeing of communities

Each pathway explores a specific theme and provides detailed insights on how these objectives can be achieved across the rail sector.

In addition, School admins can access the Company Learning Pathway which provides an overview of essential policies, compliance guidelines, and business support information tailored specifically for the rail supply chain.

To access the Company Learning Pathway, School users with company owner or admin rights should go to the “view available pathways” section on the company dashboard.
